SMG Review: Opeth Live at the Mayan!

They are Swedish, they are Metal and they ROCK!
Have you ever gone to see a band perform live and left the show feeling totally inspired and alive to the point that you just wanna rush home, pick up your axe and get lost in the power of expression? We’ll last night I had that experience when I went to see Opeth live at The Mayan in downtown LA. Now for those of you that are not familiar with Opeth they are primarily known as a death metal band hailing from Stockholm Sweden with a back catalog that consists of ten studio albums, three live albums, two box sets, and three video albums.

SMG Guitar Lesson #20: Beginner Exercises Part 2 of 3

Changing chords quickly is one of the most challenging aspects of guitar playing if you're a beginner. One of the bad habits that I refer to in this video is "Building Chords From Scratch". This is a huge "no-no" and, without proper guidance, can set your progress back years, if not stifle it completely! Instead, it's better learn how to break down the various movements your individual fingers make one-by-one, and slowly program your motor skills so that your movements are smooth and effortless. Fortunately, we only fret with four fingers, so there are only so many combinations of finger

Guitar Zen: Illuminating the Color of Sound

Music has often been referred to as colorful which implies that sound embodies a particular visible shade of color. In many ways this is true as all color is the reflection of light and shade and music is the reflection of the light that shines from within the human spirit. In this way, seeing music as colorful is much more than a metaphorical conception of sound but a realization that the light of the soul reflects through art and is projected into the minds of others producing the visual concept of it’s sonic illumination.

Just as we can recognize the presence of energies and the

Guitar Zen: Living the Dream, or Just Dreaming!

I don’t know about you, but from the moment I had first picked up the guitar, I was sure that I would become a rock star! There was nothing to stand in my way and no way to knock me off my chosen path. Twenty-one years later, as I reflect back, the dream has remained the same but the perspective has shifted. Being a rock star is no longer important or even the goal as much as carving a niche musically that will hopefully have some positive impact when I am but a lowly speck of dust that will hopefully give enough sustenance to the Earth for another crop of trees to rise up and

John Lennon: Still More Popular Than...

John Lennon was born in Liverpool, England on October 9, 1940 during a German air raid in World War II. Though he survived five years of bombing raids by the Germans, John was gunned down by a deranged fan over 30 years ago.

SMG Tips: A Guitar Collector's Two Best Friends

THE BOOK ON GUITAR
Through the years I have bought and sold a number of guitars and plucked away on countless others in shops and at the homes of friends. Some of my purchases were practical and well thought out while others were impulse buys that I regretted and ended up reselling. As with many pursuits, experience breeds wisdom and as such I have found two tools I rely on when shopping for guitars: Craigslist and The Blue Book of Guitars (one for acoustic and one for electric).

eBay is generally the first online source people think of when considering used gear. It’s great

Dimebag Darrell Abbott: A Heavy Metal Pioneer

Metal Guitarist and Legend, "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott in full shred!

What do you get when you mix Ace Frehley, Billy Gibbons, Tony Iommi, Judas Priest and Van Halen? A style that only one man can pull off.

Abbott is one of those players who began at an early age and never let up. At age 13, he picked up a Les Paul copy and began shredding. His father, Jerry Abbott, a country musician, gave young Darrell the option of a BMX bike or a guitar. At first Darrell chose the bike, but soon afterward, he pleaded with his dad to get the guitar instead. Rumor has it that early on, Darrell was so

SMG Review: Gibson Limited Run Flying V with Tremolo Electric Guitar

The Gibson Limited Run Flying V with Tremolo allows that classic dive bomb we all know and love!
Gibson was founded by Orville Gibson who made mandolins in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in the late 1890s. He invented arch top guitars by using the same type of carved, arched tops found on violins. By the 1930s, the company was also making flattop acoustic guitars, as well as one of the first commercially available hollow-body electric guitars. In the early 1950s, Gibson introduced its first solid-body electric guitar and its most popular guitar to date—the Les Paul.
The Gibson Flying V is
