SMG Review: Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar

The Redesigned Fender American Standard Stratocaster Electric Guitar!

Originally when it hit the scene, the Stratocaster was released in a 2-color sunburst finish on a solid, deeply contoured ash body, a one-piece maple neck with 21 frets, black dot inlays, and Kluson machine heads, until 1956, when Fender started making bodies made from solid alder. Also available were a set of custom colors that wasn't standardized until 1960. These custom colors mostly consisted of automobile lacquer colors made by DuPont and could be had for an extra 5% cost. The single-ply, 8-screw hole

SMG Guitar Lesson #17: Aeolian Mode

Unfortunately, due to the recent hurricane this weekend, I was unable to edit and upload a brand new lesson on Aeolian mode. However, this gave me the chance to dip into my archives a bit. I thought it would be fun to share with you a couple of video lessons on the subject that I produced back in 09'. It's a lot of the same material from the book, the only difference is that now there are better illustrations, and I no longer have a beard!

In this lesson, we'll discuss the history of Aeolian mode, it's significance, study the scale pattern most closely associated with Aeolian mode, as

SMG Review: You Rock Guitar by Inspired Instruments!

The Inspired Instruments You Rock Guitar!
Over the past five years or so there have been a huge influx of popular video games focused on “virtually living the dream” and promising to transform your youngster or teen into the next Guitar Hero. This insurgence of guitar based gaming has done a great job of reintroducing REAL guitar driven music to the modern music market and has introduced countless young potential shredders to some classic music that they may have never been exposed to otherwise. The drawback to these games is that they never really focus on true musicianship or

SMG Guitar Lesson #16: Mixolydian Mode

The notion of the Mixolydian mode dates back to the music theory of ancient Greece. However, the Mixolydian mode that we know today is very different than that of the Greeks. Modern day Mixolydian mode didn't begin to take shape until around the middle ages through various translations, mistranslations, and alterations at the dawn of Gregorian chant. In other words, medieval music theorists kind of pulled this one out of the blue. You might as well say that Mixolydian means "mixed-up-lydian" mode. Ironically enough, modern day Mixolydian mode is very closely associated with rock n' roll

SMG Review: Fender Blacktop Stratocaster HH Electric Guitar with Floyd Rose Tremolo

Fender Blacktop Stratocaster with Floyd Rose Electric Guitar
What is known today as "Fender Guitars" began as Fender’s Radio Service towards the end of 1938 in Fullerton, California, USA. As an electronics technician, Leo Fender had experience repairing radios, phonograph players, home audio amplifiers, public address systems and musical instrument amplifiers. Leo soon became interested in improving the musical instrument amplifiers, and he began custom-building a few amps based on his original designs.

Five Great Ways to Display Your Guitars

A guitar is not only a musical instrument. Sure, it is capable of filling rhythm, lead and harmony bliss. And once you figure out how to jam on a cool riff, there is something that bonds you to the playability of the wood, strings, metal and paint. If all of the fun one could obtain from a guitar ended right there, that would be okay. But the guitar god's were very kind to us and they did not stop there. Guitars in all of their various models, shapes and designs are also a work of art.

First a guitar has to be conceived. Someone thinks it up! They draw a sketch and after several

SMG Guitar Lesson #15: Lydian Mode

The fourth mode of the major key is the Lydian mode, and is named after the ancient lydians who were at their height of power around 600 B.C. The Lydians were the first people to use gold and silver coins as a form of currency, so it's no wonder that this mode sounds so rich and exotic. It's also for this reason that Lydian mode is most popular with today's progressive rock guitar gods like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. I wonder how the ancient Lydians would react if they could hear how far their music has echoed into the future.... it would probably blow their

Shipping A Guitar Takes Extra Care

Whether you are a musician on the move or have sold an old guitar on eBay, it is important to know how to ship a guitar properly. These delicate devices need to be properly packed for shipping so that they are not damaged.

For proper shipping of a guitar, it is obviously necessary to pack it properly.

The first and foremost step is to loosen the strings of the guitar by at least one step. While shipping, the strings might experience high tension and this can cause them to snap and cause unnecessary tension on the neck.

The next step is adding proper

T-Rex Engineering was founded by Lars Dahl and Sebastian Jensen who still claim to be "tech geeks and music freaks." They started the company in 1996 so they could build the best guitar MIDI gear around. Within no time, they had achieved their goals and began producing the legendary Mac1 MIDI controller and Bigfoot MIDI board. T-Rex then began making guitar effects pedals. The idea was simple. Sunset Boulevard's Guitar Gulch

Whether you’re shopping for a guitar or just get warm fuzzies being around them, visiting the businesses making up Sunset Boulevard’s “Guitar Gulch” in Hollywood, CA is a must. Sadly, there used to be several more shops in the area, but over time these gave way to factors like competition and trading in ‘brick and mortar’ for ‘click and order’ presences online. But fear not! There is still PLENTY to keep you enraptured for hours.

Note: Many of these stores deal in more than just guitars but guitars are the focus of this article.

Musician Profile: Stevie is God!

Steve Winwood performing live with Eric Clapton

LEGENDARY BLUES ARTISTS
A possible clue to what makes a guitarist or a band great can be found by looking at the career of Eric Clapton and some of the musicians who have played with him.
Clapton is God, was written in graffiti on walls for a time in the mid to late 1960s in England, and he has always been looked at as a great guitarist. When I hear his music I hear the whole of the experience, and know that he has constantly surrounded himself with other great musicians. By far my favorite artist who has been associated with Eric
